All About Lake Anna

Lake Anna is the second largest lake in the state of Virginia, with over 220 miles or shoreline covering three counties including Louisa, Spotsylvania and Orange. Lake Anna is 17 miles long and home to the Dominion North Anna Power Station. The lake itself was designed as a cooling agent for the power plant, and continues to act in that role. Lake Anna was filled by Hurricane Agnes in 1972, just like Lake Holiday.

Due to it’s size, Lake Anna is very unique in that there are many individual neighborhoods, each with there own amenities, rules, tax rates, and leadership. There is a public side and a private side to Lake Anna. The public side has waterfront businesses, marinas, and of course public access for visitors to use the beach, camping areas, and boat launches. The private side is only open to property owners. There are no commercial businesses or public boat launches on the private side which includes the south side of the lake and west of dikes 1, 2, and 3. Many refer to the private side as the warm side as the water that cools the power plant is released into the lake raising the temperature of the water a few degrees compared to the north side of the lake.

Lake Anna offers resale homes, new construction and lots. As you look through properties and homes for sale online you will find a very large range of prices. Lots and homes fall into categories including waterfront and water access. Lots range from standard, to economy, high end and premier starting around $100k to $500k+. That means there is still plenty of room to develop around Lake Anna, but demand continues to grow due to it’s easy access to northern Virginia and Washington DC.
